Program overview

This course examines:

The drivers of price fluctuation in the global energy market through an historical overview of changes in that market, with an emphasis on the interaction of economic and political factors and the impact on industry;

The particular political economic characteristics of major oil exporting states, with an eye to critically assessing the “resource curse” argument and the impact on business decision-making;

Current regulatory challenges for energy exporters and importers (both countries and industrial entities); and
The future of energy supply and demand and implications for energy exporters.

Professor Gregory Gause

Dr. F. Gregory Gause, III, joined the Bush School in 2014 as the head of the Department of International Affairs, serving until 2022 in that capacity, and holds the John H. Lindsey ’44 Chair. He was previously at the University of Vermont, where he was professor of political science from 1995 to 2014 and, from 2010 to 2013, chair of its Department of Political Science. He served as director of the University's Middle East Studies Program from 1998 to 2008. He was a Non-Resident Senior Fellow at the Brookings Doha Center from 2012-2015. Dr. Gause received his PhD in political science from Harvard University (1987) and studied Arabic at the American University in Cairo (1982-83) and at Middlebury College (1984).

Dr. Eric Lewis

Dr. Eric Lewis joined the Department of Public Service and Administration faculty in September 2019 as an Assistant Professor. He was previously an Economist with the Antitrust Division of the United States Department of Justice. Dr. Lewis earned his bachelor’s degree in economics and Middle East studies and Arabic from Brigham Young University in 2007, graduating cum laude. He received his MA in Economics in 2014 and his PhD in Economics in 2015, both from the University of Michigan. During his graduate studies, Dr. Lewis received numerous awards and scholarships relating to his research on industrial organization, and energy and environmental economics, primarily on the oil and gas industry.
